Atmospheric Aerosol Outbreak over Nicosia, Cyprus, in April 2019: Case Study

This paper aims to analyze the significant changes in atmospheric aerosol characteristics during extreme outbreak event April 2019 atmosphere over Cyprus Eastern Mediterranean. We study optical depth (AOD), Ångström exponent (AE), single-scattering albedo, refractive index, size, and vertical distribution of particles intense advection detail. For this purpose, we used ground-based observations sun-photometer AERONET Nicosia station, lidar measurements, back trajectories air movements calculated using Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory Model (HYSPLIT). To compare with background load conditions year, available data AOD AE were from at site 2015–2022 period. On 23–25 2019, strong was detected according observations. 25 day largest contamination, value exceeded 0.9 λ = 500 nm. Analysis microphysical supported that consists mainly Saharan dust particles. assumption confirmed by versus variations, size retrievals, as well HYSPLIT backward trajectories, where masses containing came mostly North Africa. The analysis shows one strongest surges regularly take place springtime Cyprus. noticeable reduction effective radiative forcing caused increasing amount revealed.
